I often say we don’t talk about the transition for student-athletes enough. It’s a time of uncertainty, self-doubt, and a long road to re-identifying who you are and what your purpose is. The impact a mentor could have had on my personal experience as I moved into the “real world” would have been invaluable. I believe any former athlete would tell you they wish they would have had someone with similar experience to lean on and show them the way. Little did I know at the time, employers are looking for the transferable skills that nearly every athlete carries with them following a successful playing career. I found my new sport in Software Sales – where there is a scoreboard, competition, and you get out exactly what you put in – just as I did with soccer. I’d encourage any athlete to consider it as a long term career if you are unsure about what your future holds.
The Edge Program has my full support. It’s exactly what former athletes hoped for and what future athletes need.
